B & Q boost for mining village
12:00pm Thursday 2nd September 2010
HISTORIC Howe Bridge is blossoming thanks to a resurgence of the community spirit that existed when it developed into a 'model' pit village.
And Terry Daly, chairman of the Bridgers Group, is proud of his nucleus of busy 'Bs' who have spurred the community to a national award.
The Bridgers entered Colliers Corner in the House Beautiful's greener streets competition run in conjunction with DIY giant B&Q.
And Colliers Corner was judged best innovative community scheme.
"I'm delighted that we won first prize - £3,000 worth of B & Q vouchers which we'll use to buy tools and items to ensure we can maintain and improve all our community projects.
"A massive 'thank you' is due to everyone," said Terry.
To add to a great result Briar Wood (situated behind the Leigh Road Scout headquarters) was entered into the same competition by Atherton Environment Projects (an integral part of The Bridgers) and was awarded £350 worth of B & Q vouchers.
