Leigh East 22 Woolston Rovers 22
WINTER snow and ice meant the only game North West Counties Amateur Rugby League game played at the weekend was on the 3G pitch at Leigh Sports Village – a Division Four clash between the league leaders Woolston Rovers and second place Leigh East.
Woolston dominated the first half due to many unforced errors and penalties allowing them to control the match and build pressure on the East defence.
East, 16-0 down at half time, buckled down and gave away fewer penalties and began to dominate possession, managing to bring the scores back to 10-16 within 10 minutes of the restart with tries from Danny Richardson and Chris Penkywicz.
Woolston managed to extend their lead to 22-10 but another try from the big prop Penkywicz and then Adam Holland darting over from 20 yards meant that a nail-biting finish was on the cards.
This Saturday East’s first team are in BARLA National Cup action at home against last season’s National Conference League finalists Siddal, kick off 2pm.
With only three weeks to go before the start of the inaugural summer NCL season, both clubs see this as the best preparation for a new campaign.
The winners, however, may not be able to field a full team in the quarter finals because the fixture will clash with RFL National Conference League fixtures.
